Update 9th December
General Election on Thursday 12th December
River Park Leisure Centre will be completely closed to the public from noon on Thursday 12th to noon on Friday 13th December. All activities scheduled between these times have therefore been cancelled. Classes scheduled to finish before noon on Thursday 12th December will run as usual. Please refer to the programme below for exact details. Members are asked to vacate the premises as quickly as possible at noon.
Christmas Party
Because of an overrun of a River Park course it has been necessary, as agreed at the AGM to change the date of the Christmas Party to Thursday 19th December starting at 12.15. This means that all classes will run as normal on Tuesday next week.
Annual General Meeting 2019
The minutes of the meeting, including the accounts presented, are now available on the website and will be on the noticeboard from tomorrow.
At the committee meeting held on Tuesday 3rd December Sandra Waterman was co-opted as a member of the committee.

Monday Keep Fit (14.00 – 15.00)
The last class before the holiday period will be held on Monday 16th December and this will restart on 6th January. It has been agreed that this class will continue through to Easter at least. This class costs £4.00 per attendance payable in class; there is no need to pay anything at Reception for this.

Thursday Keep Fit (10.00 – 11.00)
The last class before the holiday period will be held on Thursday 12th December and will start again on 9th January.
T'ai Chi
Classes will be held on 12th & 19th December and 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th January. Because of RPLC being shut from noon on 12th December and with the Christmas party on the 19th, the main class will run from 9.50 - 10.50 and the introductory 10.55 - 11.55 on both those dates. Members will need to leave the centre promptly at the end of the introductory class on Election Day.
The cost for the 4 sessions in January will be £6.00.
Pilates
This will finish on Thursday 19th December and start again on Thursday 9th January.
Classes take place as normal on 12th December.

The last yoga session of 2019 has now been held. Classes will recommence on Thursday 9th January with a 6 week session costing £9.00.
Short Tennis on Fridays
There are now 3 courts available from 10.00 to 12.00. These are not available on 12th December, but it is planned to hold this session on 20th December. After the holiday this will restart on 10th January as the sports hall floor is being “done” on the 3rd January.
These sessions cost £2.50 per attendance payable at Reception. There is no payment to the club required for this.
Swimming & Aquacise
On Thursday 12th December the swimming session will stop at 11.55 and at 12.15 on Thursday 19th December. There will be no aquacise on either day.
Sports Hall
There will be no club activities in the sports hall in weeks commencing 23rd & 30th December.

2020 Memberships
Membership renewals are due after 1st January. Linda Messingham and helpers will be available upstairs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 09.45 to 11.00 only, during January, starting from the 7th, to re-enrol members. Payments in cash or by internet banking transfer only. As agreed at the AGM membership will again be £5 for the year or part thereof.

Podiatrist
One of our 2019 social events was a talk by Nick Knight who is a sports podiatrist. Here is an extract from his latest news:
NK Active Newsletter - November 2019
Last Tuesday, 26th November, NK active was invited to do an "Ask the podiatrist" day at WJ French & Sons shoe shop in Southampton, to help celebrate Small business Saturday. WJ French & Sons doesn't really need any introduction, as a lot of local people already know it from having had their shoes fitted there when they were a child, and possibly their parents and even grandparents. It is one of the few independent shoe shops that actually fit footwear properly and it is an amazing experience. They have over 18,000 pairs of shoes in stock.
Charlie and I went down to help with the ask the podiatrist day, answering any questions and queries that people had about lower limb problems. We saw people with plantar plate injuries, psoriatic arthritis, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon issues, big toe arthritis, bunions and much more.
I even went on BBC Radio Solent as part of the day, and talked about footwear advice and the issues we face. If you are interested in hearing the interview this is the link to it, my bit starts at 2:56:40.

Let's Talk About...Capsulitis
Each month we will give you some information about a podiatry issue, which might be temporary or growth related, follows an injury, or is just part of the aging process.
What is it?
Ligaments surrounding a joint form a capsule. This capsule supports toe movement, for example when walking. Capsulitis is the condition whereby the ligaments become inflamed and irritated.
Why does it happen?
Capsulitis often occurs in the 2nd toe and is generally a result of abnormal foot mechanics whereby the toe is being overloaded.
Who does it affect?
People with:
- Severe bunion deformity
- Tight calf muscles
- Long toe compared to the big toe
- Injury to the toe
Or people who:
- Wear high heels as this can cause additional pressure over the toes
- Repeat movements such as running, gardening or kneeling consistently increase the load in that joint
What are the common symptoms associated with this condition?
Symptoms are often reported as:
- Pain, particularly on the ball of the foot; often described as a marble or stone
- Swelling in the area of pain
- Pain on walking barefoot
- Pain on movement of toe
- Pain whilst wearing shoes
What will happen if I leave it?
As this condition progresses, the ligament structures become weaken and thus the ligaments fail to stabilise the joint. This in turn, causes the unstable toe to change position either drifting towards the other toes or crossing over them.
What can I do?
In the short term:
- Rest and cold therapies - staying off the foot and applying cold packs can help reduce some of the swelling and pain. Apply an ice pack, placing a thin towel between the ice and the skin. Use the cold therapy for no longer than 20 minutes and then wait at least 40 minutes before icing again.
- Oral medications - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, may help relieve the pain and inflammation.
- Taping - taping the toe can sometimes help keep it in the correct position. This helps relieve the pain and prevent further drifting of the toe.
- Stretching - stretching exercises may be prescribed for patients who have tight calf muscles.
Longer term:
- Shoe modifications - supportive shoes with stiff soles are recommended because they control the motion and lessen the amount of pressure on the ball of the foot.
- Orthotic devices - can support foot function and help with redistributing weight away from the joint.
- Strengthening exercises – as the ligaments start to weaken it can be possible to strength muscles to help stabilise the structure (reduce pain) and improve foot function.
- Steroid Injection – an injection can sometimes help reduce pain and discomfort.
- Surgery – once the toe starts to change shape and deviate towards the other toes, then surgical input can be needed to help modify toe shape.
NK Active can help you with a clinical diagnosis, as well as provide guidance on stretching, footwear advice and activity management.
