Update 30th September

Photographs

The 200 photographs that Tim Humphrey took at the beginning of September have now been sorted into groups by sports and activities. The next stage is to move on to the process of obtaining signed permission forms from the “models” and to identify everyone. The Chairman will be wandering around with a laptop at various times over the next few weeks so that people can see what they look like. These photographs will be considered for use on the website and also for the reprint of the Club’s advertising leaflet, but only with signed permission.

Pilates

The additional small class is being held on Thursdays in squash court 1 from 10.00 to 11.00 starting this week. There is a limit of 9 people plus the instructor so this class will cost £4 per week. There is one place still available; please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you wish to take this up; all standards welcome.

Monday Keep Fit (14.00 – 15.00)

It is planned to continue this class during October excluding half-term, Monday 28th.  As numbers are not covering the cost of the room and the instructor it has been decided that the cost must increase to £4 per session and at this new rate there is a need for an average of 13 people per session. Numbers will be reviewed during October to ascertain viability for a permanent class. There is no need to book so if you are interested just come along to Studio 1. There is no need to pay anything at all at Reception for this class.

T'ai Chi

Classes will take place on 3rd, 17th and 24th October. There will be no T'ai Chi classes on 10th & 31st October.

Classes will also be held on 7th, 14th, 21st, & 28th November. December classes will be held on the 5th and 12th. The 19th is a possibility but the club has not yet received confirmation as to when the Centre will be closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Bowls

There are 6 parking passes available for use on Wednesdays only and these have to be returned at the end of the morning session. Failure to do this will result in the passes being cancelled by Riverside Bowls Club. Free parking is available with a permit within the red marked spaces outside the club; please contact the bowls club for further details.

REACT Games

The 2019 REACT Games are to be held on Thursday 10th October at High Wycombe Leisure Centre. The club has teams entered in the short tennis and table tennis events this year.

Club Dinner 2019

This is being held at the Royal Winchester Golf Club on Friday 1st November at 18.45 for a 19.30 start. The cost for members will be subsidised but not by as much as last year and will be £25 for members and £28 for non-members (both including gratuities). There are still places available. The list is up on the club’s noticeboard for members to book a place and to give their menu choices. Additionally, a column has been added so that you can specify which sports or activities you enjoy so as to assist with the seating plan. Some of this has been already filled out but please feel free to amend if appropriate.

If you have any special dietary requirements please let the Chairman know. You will be put in touch with the caterers at the club who wish to speak directly with any individual making such a request.

Payment is now requested by cash (to one of the committee members) or by bank transfer to WINCHESTER FITNESS & SPORTS CLUB (sort code 60-83-01 ACCOUNT NUMBER 20381880; please use your name as the payment reference). If you pay by cheque you must add £0.30 to the total.

Care of shuttlecocks

This is a plea for all members of the badminton group, both regulars and occasional players to take more care of our shuttlecocks. Several issues have come to light recently, so it would be greatly appreciated if you could help be following the guidelines below.

  • Please do not ‘contaminate’ the shuttlecocks we have bought by introducing inferior brands or types. We exclusively supply and use Yonex ‘Mavis 2000’ (white skirt with blue ring) shuttlecocks. We do not use, nor want yellow ones, Mavis 10’s or any other makes.
  • You can check that the shuttlecock you are playing with is the correct type by examining the small label on the back of the nose (inside the skirt). It should be as the photograph below. Anything else is to be discarded or given away.
  • The shuttlecocks we use are relatively expensive (~£2 each) and are good quality with consistent flight and velocity; they should be treated with a bit of TLC, i.e.:
    • Always replace in the carboard tube after use (unless damaged)
    • Never throw them loose into the racket bag – they can be permanently damaged (see picture below)
    • Do not put more than 6 shuttlecocks in a single tube – again, this can cause damage
    • Always check a shuttlecock for distortion or damage before use. If it’s distorted or torn, or the flight is erratic then please make sure to throw the offending item directly into a waste bin. Do not put it back in a tube for someone else to find in the next session.
